Britney Spears opening up about overwhelming Anxiety
Today I want to share with you my take on celebrity culture as it is today, with a focus on Britney, and to illuminate the inner and covert world of the unknown…the mind and celebrity personality. In this case the tabloids and broadsheets and celebrity magazines will , as I do, want to help us understand the phenomenal impact social media and world tours can have on the celebrity psyche and in particular Britney and her mental health journey over the past thirteen years and more.
Britney has reported in an Israeli newspaper Yediot Ahronet “ from an early age I have felt that everyone was testing me” .I could get overwhelmed by a lot of very small disproportionate things”She was aware of the overwhelming nature of world concert tours, fan demands, the unending production of tracks and albums, and it realty took this breakdown to bring her back to reality. Enough is enough, it did help her change perspective, It was this “ lack of control” that led Britney to feel les passionate about her music career. As I delve into her mindset I can see a happier and healthier Britney imbued with reasonable psychological normality. Of course I’m being presumptous, but all the signs are there in her narrative and celeb interviews. She also has stated in press interviews the importance of her children whom she claims has shaped her personality, This demonstrates the power kids can have in getting us grounded, in influencing our mood states and being the health tonic they often are.
One Direction star Zayn Malik also reported that he also had psychological issues with anxiety which led him to cancelling performances. Another celeb, Selena Gomez took time out from the spotlight to focus on her anxiety issues which were the side effects of Lupus.
As an ex academic and researcher into celebrities and their personalities and mental health for a few decades, and having had a deep interest in Identity and adolescence, I was constantly intrigued about the forgotten world of celebrity worship and it’s impact on fans, especially the reversal effect on the A listers.
Britney’s very recent use of #FreeBritney actually is a coping mechanism utilised to maximise her autonomy and to prevent and future relapse The emancipated self is connected to her underlying power motives which boosts her authentic self and sends out the message that she can overcome the profound sense entrapment and threats to her personal celebrity identity It also denotes the inner emotional pain she feels as she invests all her psychological functioning in a new lawyer to win her freedom as a person.
This is quite a phenomenal story as I was deeply moved when I examine her sense of victimisation in an utterly defenceless manner.I can almost feel her pain, an emotional pain possibly felt by young women the world over, celebrities included, who are entrapped and living with fear and health anxiety. I can also extract her specific personality traits of tough poise self determination and fortitude which will soon resurface as she regains her authentic selves. The past hurts and family dynamics from her breakdown in 2007 have cost her psychologically and are now residual, but they still remain. The wild exhuberant risqué goddess of the teenage pop world, …..that was a self image she has now surpassed as she begins to recreate a new self concept maturing as work in progress…. to almost prove to the world that she is in total control of her life and estate.
Britney is an artiste who has given much to our world of entertainment and we must be mindful as we strip away the exterior ..there is a young woman out there to whom we owe much as she makes a full recovery and discovery of the real autonomous Britney, In the context of mental health and in particular celebrity mental health, her openness and willingness to bring her anxiety out into the open only serves to destigmatize the perpetual issues our society has to contend with by the nations stubbornness to remain in the realm of the “private self”.
